Chimpanzee

The chimpanzee is a great ape native to the forests and savannas of equatorial Africa, one of the two species most closely related to humans, sharing a large majority of human DNA. Chimpanzees live in complex, fission-fusion social communities with a strong hierarchy, use tools such as sticks and stones to obtain food, and communicate through an extensive range of vocalizations, gestures and facial expressions. They are omnivorous, feeding mainly on fruit and plant matter but also hunting smaller animals, including other primates, cooperatively in groups. Habitat loss, poaching and disease have driven sharp declines across much of their range, and the species is classified as endangered.
