Common Warthog

The common warthog is a wild member of the pig family native to grasslands, savannas and woodlands across sub-Saharan Africa, named for the prominent wart-like protective bumps on its face and recognized by its large curved tusks, sparse bristly hair and a habit of walking or trotting with its thin tail held upright like an antenna. It feeds mainly on grasses, roots, bulbs and berries, often kneeling on its front legs to graze close to the ground, and it shelters in abandoned burrows dug by other animals, backing in tail-first so its tusks face outward toward any threat. Common warthogs are generally active during the day and live in small family groups, and the species remains widespread and is classified as being of least concern.
