Prickly shark

Fish

The prickly shark, Echinorhinus cookei, is one of two species in the family Echinorhinidae, found in the Pacific Ocean over continental shelves and slopes from Oregon to Chile in the eastern Pacific and around Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and various Pacific islands in the west. It is a stocky, dark colored shark that grows up to 4 meters long and is covered densely in thornlike dermal denticles, for which it is named. It is nocturnal, resting in deeper water during the day and moving into shallower zones at dusk, feeds on fish and cephalopods, and may use suction to catch prey given its slow swimming speed. It reproduces by bearing live young without a placenta, in notably large litters, is not known to be dangerous to humans, and has little commercial value, though it is caught incidentally by deepwater fisheries; the IUCN assesses it as Data Deficient because of its patchy distribution and expanding deepwater fishing pressure.
