Tiger beetles are fast-moving, day-active predatory beetles of the subfamily Cicindelinae, named for their aggressive hunting style and large, sickle-shaped mandibles used to seize prey. Many species are brightly colored with iridescent metallic sheens and are counted among the fastest-running insects relative to body length, some running so quickly that they must periodically pause to let their eyes refocus on prey; their larvae are sit-and-wait predators that ambush passing insects from vertical burrows dug in soil.
