Ground beetles make up the family Carabidae, a large and cosmopolitan beetle family with more than 40,000 described species worldwide, including around 2,000 in North America and 2,700 in Europe. As of 2015 it ranked among the ten most species-rich animal families known. Ground beetles belong to the suborder Adephaga, and while most species are carnivorous, some are herbivorous or omnivorous.
