The golden toad was a true toad that once thrived in a small high altitude cloud forest region of about four square kilometers near Monteverde, Costa Rica. First described in 1966, it became widely regarded as the emblem of the global amphibian decline crisis after the last confirmed sighting of a single male in 1989, and the IUCN declared it extinct in 2004.
