A mass nesting event, most famously among Kemp's ridley and olive ridley sea turtles, in which thousands to hundreds of thousands of females emerge from the sea to nest on the same beach within a span of just a few days, overwhelming predators through sheer numbers rather than relying on the more common strategy of scattered, individual nesting. The word arribada, Spanish for "arrival," describes a phenomenon still only partly understood, with cues thought to include lunar cycle, offshore winds and pheromone signals released by the first nesting females.
