Auroral chorus

Geological and Atmospheric Phenomena

An auroral chorus is a series of electromagnetic waves, produced by the same geomagnetic storms that cause auroras, whose frequencies resemble chirps, whistles, and quasi musical tones in mostly rising pitch when converted into audible sound. The sounds typically last from about 0.1 to 1.0 seconds, alongside other auroral sounds such as hissing, swishing, rustling, and cracking, and the waves themselves are natural radio waves whose electric and magnetic vibrations occur at the same frequency as sound.
