In biology, colonisation is the spread and establishment of a species in a new locality or habitat, covering both its arrival in the new area and its successful establishment within the local community there. Ecologists represent a population's long term growth rate in a new habitat with the Greek letter lambda, and colonisation together with local extinction are central components of island biogeography theory, which is applied widely across ecology, including in the study of metapopulations.
