Compact intracloud discharge

Geological and Atmospheric Phenomena

A compact intracloud discharge, also called a narrow bipolar event or narrow bipolar pulse, is an intense, extremely brief form of lightning, typically lasting only around 20 microseconds, that produces strong radio emissions but very little visible light. It is the most powerful known natural terrestrial source of radio waves in the high-frequency and very-high-frequency bands, yet despite its power scientists still have a limited understanding of the physical process that produces it.
