Condensation cloud

Geological and Atmospheric Phenomena

A condensation cloud, also called a Wilson cloud, is a cloud that briefly appears around a large explosion in sufficiently humid air. When a high explosive or nuclear weapon detonates, the negative phase of the resulting shock wave rarefies and cools the surrounding air, and if this pushes the air below its dew point, water vapor condenses into a visible cloud. The cloud is short lived, dissipating once the surrounding air pressure and temperature return to normal.
