Elevational diversity gradient

Ecological Processes

The elevational diversity gradient is an ecological pattern describing how biodiversity changes with elevation. It holds that species richness tends to decrease as elevation increases, up to a point, producing a diversity bulge at middle elevations. Multiple hypotheses have been proposed to explain the pattern, though none fully accounts for it.
