Gigantic jet

Geological and Atmospheric Phenomena

A gigantic jet is an upper-atmospheric electrical discharge that reaches even higher into the atmosphere than a blue jet, terminating at an altitude of around 90 kilometers. Unlike the carrot-shaped sprites it is otherwise related to, a gigantic jet begins as an intracloud flash between two differently charged regions inside a thundercloud, with its negative leader escaping upward toward the ionosphere; it is not associated with cloud-to-ground lightning and propagates upward more slowly than a typical sprite, making it a distinct class of transient luminous event occurring high above a storm.
