Herbivory

Ecological Processes

Herbivory is the phenomenon of an animal feeding on plants, most often on vascular plant tissue such as foliage, fruit or seeds, though it also extends to feeding on non-vascular autotrophs such as mosses, algae and lichens, and excludes feeding on already-decomposed plant matter or on fungi. Animals that practice herbivory typically have mouth structures specialized for breaking down plant material and digestive systems containing enzymes such as amylase and cellulase, and many also rely on symbiotic gut bacteria and protozoans to help break down the cellulose in plant cell walls.
