Honey bee starvation is a state in which a colony experiences a shortage of food, chiefly honey, brought on by circumstances such as over-harvesting by beekeepers without adequate supplemental feeding, poor weather, disease or the stress of transportation. Starvation can also worsen the harmful effects of pesticide exposure on a colony. A 2014-15 survey found backyard beekeepers losing 52 percent of colonies, with roughly 22 percent of keepers naming starvation as a contributing factor.
