Hybrid speciation

Evolutionary Processes

Hybrid speciation is a form of speciation in which hybridization between two different species gives rise to a new species that is reproductively isolated from both of its parent species. It occurs when the offspring of a cross between two species can themselves interbreed and, over time, diverge enough that they can no longer breed with either parent population. Once thought to be extremely rare, DNA analysis has shown that hybrid speciation is actually fairly common, especially among plants.
