Lightning activity level (LAL) is a meteorological scale, labeled 1 through 6, that describes the frequency and character of lightning associated with thunderstorms in a given area. Level 1 means no thunderstorms; levels 2 through 5 describe increasingly frequent cloud-to-ground strikes, from isolated storms producing one to five strikes per five minutes at level 2 up to numerous storms producing more than fifteen strikes per five minutes at level 5; and level 6 describes dry lightning with no rain, which is flagged for fire danger and can trigger a red flag warning. The scale is no longer used in wildland fire forecasting.
