Nectar source

Ecological Processes

A nectar source is a flowering plant that produces nectar as part of its reproductive strategy, using the sugary secretion to attract pollinating insects and, in some cases, birds. Nectar sources are valued in both beekeeping and agriculture, since the same plants that draw pollinators to a crop can also give shelter to insects that prey on garden pests, a benefit prized in organic farming. Gardeners plant nectar sources deliberately to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, so the same class of plant supports honey production, crop pollination, and ornamental wildlife gardening at once.
