Parallel speciation

Evolutionary Processes

Parallel speciation is a type of speciation in which closely related populations, living in separate but similar environments, repeatedly evolve the same reproductively isolating traits through the same mechanisms. The descendant populations become isolated from their own ancestral lineage while remaining compatible with other independent lineages living in similar habitats. It differs from ordinary parallel evolution because the shared traits specifically prevent interbreeding rather than simply representing similar adaptations.
