Phenotypic disparity

Evolutionary Processes

Phenotypic disparity, also called morphological diversity, morphological variety, morphological disparity, morphodisparity, or simply disparity, refers to the degree of variation in observable characteristics within a biological group. The concept originated in paleontology and has since been applied to the study of living organisms as well. Some biologists treat phenotypic disparity as an important component of biodiversity, while others regard the two as distinct concepts.
