Polyploidy is a condition in which the cells of an organism carry more than two paired sets of chromosomes, rather than the two sets found in most diploid organisms. It can arise through abnormal cell division or through fertilization involving more than one sperm cell, and it is especially common among plants. A polyploid organism may carry three, four, or more complete chromosome sets instead of the usual two.
