A subspecies is a taxonomic rank below species, used for populations of the same species that live in different areas and differ somewhat in size, shape, or other physical traits while still being able to interbreed successfully. A species is only divided into subspecies when it holds at least two such recognized populations; most species have none. In zoological classification, subspecies is the only formally recognized rank below species that receives its own official scientific name.
