A sunbreak is a natural phenomenon in which sunlight that is obscured over a wide area manages to penetrate the obscuring material in a localized spot, most commonly when a gap in cloud cover lets a shaft of light through. The same effect can occur when sunlight passes through a gap between large buildings and into an area otherwise left in shadow. The visible beam of light characteristic of a sunbreak, often called a sunbeam, results from dust and moisture particles in the air scattering and reflecting the sun's rays.
