Synurbization is the adaptation of wildlife to the conditions found in urbanized environments, producing populations that differ behaviorally, physiologically, and ecologically from members of the same species living in their natural habitat. It occurs both when a city expands into land that was already animal habitat and when wildlife moves into and colonizes existing urban areas, and it favors individuals with traits or behavioral flexibility that raise their chances of survival in a human dominated setting. Some of these adaptations help a species persist alongside people, while others can create problems for the wildlife itself or for the humans living nearby.
