Waggle dance

Animal Behavior and Adaptation

The waggle dance is a figure-eight dance performed by honey bees to tell other foragers in the hive where to find food, water, or a new nest site. A bee that has found a good resource repeats a straight, waggling run followed by a loop back to the start, angling the straight run relative to vertical to indicate the direction of the source relative to the sun, while the length of the waggle run encodes how far away it is. The Austrian ethologist Karl von Frisch was among the first researchers to decode the dance's meaning, work for which he later shared a Nobel Prize.
