Nature Atlas
Things this atlas does not know. Each entry is a question that specialists
have posed and not settled, recorded with what would actually resolve it and which
expertise the answer needs.
These are kept deliberately, rather than quietly omitted. An atlas that shows
only what it is sure of implies a confidence it has not earned, and the gaps are often where
the interesting work is. Several sit exactly where two fields fail to meet: identifying the
hyssop of the Hebrew Bible needs a botanist and a philologist of Biblical Hebrew, and neither
one settles it alone.
Grouped by the expertise recorded on each question, in the words the question itself uses. Most of these are held by a single question.

Conservation botany / field ecology 2
Cacao (Theobroma cacao)
How Large Is the Wild Theobroma cacao Population?
Open Cacao (Theobroma cacao)
Why It Is Open Cultivated cacao is grown across the tropics in the billions of trees, but the ancestral wild population in the Amazon basin has never been adequately censused, which is why the IUCN rates the species Data Deficient rather than assigning it a threat category with a population figure.
What Would Settle It A systematic field survey of wild Theobroma cacao stands across the Amazon basin, of the kind IUCN Red List assessors have run for better-studied tree species.
Expertise Needed Conservation botany / field ecology
Question posed in
Theobroma cacao (Wikipedia).
Coffee Plant (Coffea arabica)
How Large Is the Wild Coffea arabica Population?
Open Coffee Plant (Coffea arabica)
Why It Is Open The IUCN Endangered rating for wild Coffea arabica is built from range decline and climate-suitability modeling rather than a direct wild census with a published number, so how many wild individuals remain in the Ethiopian, South Sudanese and Yemeni highland forests is not established.
What Would Settle It A range-wide field census of wild Coffea arabica stands across its native Ethiopian, South Sudanese and Yemeni highland forests.
Expertise Needed Conservation botany / field ecology
Question posed in
Coffea arabica (Wikipedia).
Entomology 2
Kruger National Park
Open Question: Kruger National Park
Open Kruger National Park
Why It Is Open Kruger National Park's own recorded insect inventory is incomplete; its Wikipedia entry states the total number of Lepidoptera species in the park is unknown but could be in the order of 7,000.
What Would Settle It A systematic lepidopteran survey of the park's full range of habitats and seasons.
Expertise Needed Entomology
Question posed in
Kruger National Park (Wikipedia).
Yellowjacket
What Is the Total Population of Yellowjackets Worldwide?
Open Yellowjacket
Why It Is Open Yellowjacket colonies are annual and mostly die off each winter, with only mated queens overwintering to found new nests, so no comprehensive census tracks total colony or individual numbers across the many Vespula and Dolichovespula species and their ranges.
What Would Settle It Standardized trapping and nest-density surveys repeated across regions and seasons for every yellowjacket species.
Expertise Needed Entomology
Question posed in
Yellowjacket (Wikipedia), Nesting section, one-season sentence.
Ornithology 2
Common Raven
What is the common raven's true global population?
Open Common Raven
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article consulted for this species gives no single global population figure; secondary web results cite conflicting uncited totals (roughly 16 million versus 29 million) with no raw source page fetched to confirm either.
What Would Settle It A dated global population estimate from a named, fetchable source (BirdLife International DataZone, Partners in Flight, or the IUCN Red List assessment page) with a verbatim figure this atlas can cite directly.
Expertise Needed Ornithology
Question posed in
Common Raven (Wikipedia), Population section (absent).
White Stork
What is the white stork's current global population, as a number?
Open White Stork
Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article consulted gives only scattered national and regional breeding-pair counts (for example Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria); a secondary web search found a BirdLife-attributed figure of roughly 700,000 individuals worldwide, but the BirdLife DataZone factsheet page itself is JavaScript-rendered and no raw verbatim figure could be fetched from it this pass.
What Would Settle It A verbatim global population figure fetched directly from the BirdLife DataZone factsheet, the European Red List of Birds PDF, or an equivalent named source this atlas can cite with a real locator and quote.
Expertise Needed Ornithology
Question posed in
White Stork (Wikipedia), Population section (absent).
Physical geography / biogeography 2
Eurasian Steppe
What is the total area of the Eurasian Steppe?
Open Eurasian Steppe
Why It Is Open This atlas's own cited Wikipedia article describes the Eurasian Steppe by the countries it crosses and its west-east extent ("It stretches westward some 8000 kilometres (5000 miles) from Manchuria across Mongolia, Xinjiang, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Hungary") but states no total-area figure anywhere. Public reference sources checked separately describe the steppe's boundary differently, especially where it grades into desert to the south and forest to the north, and the area figures given across those sources diverge by several million square kilometers depending on the boundary used; none of those figures is stored here because none was confirmed against its own raw source text at a specific, citable locator.
What Would Settle It A single authoritative biogeographic source that fixes the steppe's boundary (for example a named ecoregion or biome classification) and states the resulting total area for exactly that boundary.
Expertise Needed Physical geography / biogeography
Question posed in
Eurasian Steppe (Wikipedia), Wikipedia article body, states an 8,000 km west-east extent and the countries crossed, no area figure given.
Pacific Northwest Temperate Rainforest
What is the total area of the Pacific temperate rainforest?
Open Pacific Northwest Temperate Rainforest
Why It Is Open This atlas's own cited Wikipedia article and the WWF classification both describe the Pacific temperate rainforest as the world's largest temperate rainforest, but the region is mapped as several separate ecoregions (Northern Pacific coastal forests, British Columbia mainland coastal forests, Central Pacific coastal forests, Klamath-Siskiyou forests and others), each carrying its own area figure in reference sources. No live source found states one combined total for the whole region, and summing the separate ecoregion figures ourselves would be this atlas's own calculation rather than an attested figure taken from a source.
What Would Settle It A single authoritative source (WWF or a peer-reviewed biogeography reference) that states one combined total area for the Pacific temperate rainforest as a single region, or that explicitly names which ecoregions such a total should sum.
Expertise Needed Physical geography / biogeography
Question posed in
Pacific Temperate Rainforests (Wikipedia), Wikipedia article body describes region as world's largest temperate rainforest, gives no combined area total.
Physical geography / vegetation ecology 2
Heath
What is the total global area of heath habitat?
Open Heath
Why It Is Open Heath is a globally distributed shrubland habitat type occurring on every continent except Antarctica (Australia, southern Africa, Texas, New Caledonia, Chile, Mediterranean shores and elsewhere), not one bounded place, and this atlas's own cited Wikipedia article gives no single combined global area figure for it anywhere in the text, only qualitative statements that it is widespread and that many of its European stands are vanishing.
What Would Settle It A single authoritative global inventory of heath habitat extent across every continent where it occurs, using one consistent definition of what counts as heath as opposed to moorland or other shrubland.
Expertise Needed Physical geography / vegetation ecology
Question posed in
Heath (Wikipedia), Wikipedia article body, describes heath as widespread across multiple continents, states no combined global area figure anywhere in the article.
Moorland
What is the total global area of moorland?
Open Moorland
Why It Is Open Moorland occurs as a habitat type across tropical Africa, northern and western Europe and South America rather than as one bounded place; this atlas's own cited Wikipedia article states only that Great Britain holds an estimated 10 to 15 percent of the world's moors, a proportion that itself implies no global total is stated anywhere in the article, since the figure is given as a share rather than alongside an absolute worldwide total.
What Would Settle It A single authoritative global inventory of moorland extent across every region where it occurs, under one consistent definition distinguishing moorland from heath and from tundra.
Expertise Needed Physical geography / vegetation ecology
Question posed in
Moorland (Wikipedia), Wikipedia article body, states Great Britain holds 10-15 percent of the world's moors, no combined global area figure anywhere in the article.
Primatology and conservation biology 2
Spider Monkey
How many spider monkeys exist in the wild?
Open Spider Monkey
Why It Is Open All seven Ateles species are assessed as threatened, but published figures cover only individual species and local populations; no total wild population figure spanning the whole genus has been assembled.
What Would Settle It Range-wide population surveys for each of the seven Ateles species, combined into a single genus total.
Expertise Needed Primatology and conservation biology
Question posed in
Spider Monkey (Wikipedia).
Capuchin Monkey
How many capuchin monkeys exist in the wild?
Open Capuchin Monkey
Why It Is Open Capuchin monkey taxonomy across Cebus and Sapajus remains disputed, and most population data are local abundance studies rather than range-wide counts, so no reliable total population figure exists for the group.
What Would Settle It A settled species-level taxonomy for Cebinae paired with range-wide surveys for each recognized species.
Expertise Needed Primatology and conservation biology
Question posed in
Capuchin Monkey (Wikipedia).
wildlife population ecology 2
Muskrat
What is the muskrat's total global population, as a number?
Open Muskrat
Why It Is Open Wikipedia states the muskrat population has declined by at least one-half in 34 US states but gives no total global count or range anywhere in the article, only this regional decline figure.
What Would Settle It A coordinated global or continent-wide muskrat census or standing estimate from a wildlife authority such as IUCN or a national fish and wildlife agency.
Expertise Needed wildlife population ecology
Question posed in
Muskrat (Wikipedia), Range and conservation status section.
Sun Bear
What is the sun bear's total global population, as a number?
Open Sun Bear
Why It Is Open Wikipedia states the global sun bear population has declined by an estimated 35 percent since the 1990s but gives no absolute total count or range anywhere in the article, only this percentage decline and local density figures.
What Would Settle It A coordinated range-wide sun bear population estimate from the IUCN Bear Specialist Group or a national wildlife authority across its Southeast Asian range.
Expertise Needed wildlife population ecology
Question posed in
Sun Bear (Wikipedia), Conservation status section, population decline estimate.
Apiculture and conservation biology 1
Honey Bee
How Many Honey Bee Colonies Exist Worldwide?
Open Honey Bee
Why It Is Open Agricultural census data counts managed hives reported by beekeepers, but no comprehensive survey exists of wild and feral honey bee colonies, so no total-species population figure can be assembled from what is currently measured.
What Would Settle It A coordinated global survey methodology for wild and feral colonies, comparable to the managed-hive agricultural census already conducted in most countries.
Expertise Needed Apiculture and conservation biology
Question posed in
Encyclopedia of Life.
Atmospheric science 1
Patagonian Steppe
Open Question: Patagonian Steppe
Open Patagonian Steppe
Why It Is Open A cited further-reading source on the Patagonian Desert Wikipedia article poses whether dust raised from the Patagonian Steppe reaches the sub-Antarctic Atlantic Ocean as an open research question.
What Would Settle It Atmospheric dust-transport modeling or sediment-core sampling in the sub-Antarctic Atlantic tracing mineral signatures back to Patagonian sources.
Expertise Needed Atmospheric science
Question posed in
Patagonian Desert (Wikipedia).
Biogeography 1
Sky Island
What is the total combined area of the world's sky islands?
Open Sky Island
Why It Is Open Sky islands are isolated mountain ranges found across many disconnected regions worldwide (the Madrean Archipelago, East African and other ranges across the Afrotropical, Australasian, Indomalayan, Nearctic, Neotropical and Palearctic realms), each with its own extent; this atlas's own cited Wikipedia article lists numerous examples by realm and gives individual elevation figures but no aggregate area measurement anywhere in the text, since the concept describes a pattern of isolation rather than one bounded region.
What Would Settle It An authoritative global inventory listing every recognized sky island range with its own area, summed under one consistent definition of what counts as a sky island.
Expertise Needed Biogeography
Question posed in
Sky Island (Wikipedia), Wikipedia article body, lists sky island examples by realm with individual elevations, states no aggregate area figure anywhere in the article.
Botany and desert ecology 1
Saguaro Cactus
How Many Wild Saguaro Cacti Exist?
Open Saguaro Cactus
Why It Is Open Regional density surveys exist within protected areas such as Saguaro National Park, but the IUCN's own assessment does not extrapolate them into a single rangewide total, so no honest total-population figure can be given.
What Would Settle It A coordinated rangewide census across the full Sonoran Desert distribution, extending the plot-based methods already used inside individual protected areas.
Expertise Needed Botany and desert ecology
Question posed in
IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Chiropterology and conservation biology 1
Flying Fox
How many flying foxes exist worldwide?
Open Flying Fox
Why It Is Open The genus Pteropus contains at least 60 species across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, East Africa and Indian and Pacific island groups; single roosts of up to 100,000 individuals are recorded for some species, but no survey aggregates a total population across the whole genus.
What Would Settle It A coordinated genus-wide census combining the separate national and island surveys already conducted for individual Pteropus species.
Expertise Needed Chiropterology and conservation biology
Question posed in
Pteropus (Wikipedia).
Climatology 1
Sonoran Desert
Open Question: Sonoran Desert
Open Sonoran Desert
Why It Is Open The Sonoran Desert's own Wikipedia entry asserts, with an acknowledged caveat, that it may be the joint hottest desert on Earth, while noting possible contrary evidence exists.
What Would Settle It A standardized comparative temperature survey across the world's hot deserts using one consistent measurement method and time period.
Expertise Needed Climatology
Question posed in
Sonoran Desert (Wikipedia).
