Hemichordates (Acorn Worms and Relatives)

Hemichordates are the acorn worms and pterobranchs, the phylum Hemichordata, which the Tree of Life places among the deuterostomes beside the echinoderms and chordates. It has two classes, the Enteropneusta, the acorn worms, in families such as Ptychoderidae, Harrimaniidae, Spengelidae and Saxipendiidae, and the Pterobranchia, in families such as Cephalodiscidae, Rhabdopleuridae and Atubaridae. GBIF counts about 1,137 descendant taxa in the Pterobranchia and about 199 in the Enteropneusta, so the pterobranch count is the larger of the two.
