Phylum

Verrucomicrobia is a phylum of bacteria found widely in soil, freshwater, and marine environments, including species capable of oxidizing methane as an energy source. The phylum takes its name from the wart-like, or verrucous, projections seen on the cell surface of some of its early described members.
