Bacterial phyla are the major divisions of the domain Bacteria, now grouped into kingdoms. The kingdom Bacillati, named by Gibbons and Murray in 1978 and validly published in its present form by Oren and Goker in 2024, contains validly named phyla such as Actinomycetota, Armatimonadota, Bacillota, Chloroflexota, Cyanobacteriota, Minisyncoccota and Mycoplasmatota. Other kingdoms of Bacteria, including Pseudomonadati, Thermotogati and Fusobacteriati, hold their own phyla, so a phylum is always read together with the kingdom that contains it.
