Escalloniales

Plant Orders

Escalloniales is a small order of flowering plants within the eudicots, comprising a handful of families including Escalloniaceae, native mainly to temperate and subtropical regions of the Southern Hemisphere, particularly South America. Species in the order include shrubs and small trees cultivated ornamentally for their flowers and foliage, such as members of the genus Escallonia. The order's exact family composition and placement among the asterids has shifted across successive Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classifications as molecular data has refined understanding of its relationships.

  • Introduction
More recent research has provided evidence that two of those families, Eremosynaceae and Tribelaceae, arose from within Escalloniaceae; the Angiosperm Phylogeny Website therefore merges these two families into Escalloniaceae, and also places the family alone in order Escalloniales.
  • In Group: Asterid Orders, Lead
Escalloniaceae is a family of flowering plants consisting of about 130 species in eight genera.
