Helodermatidae

Reptile Families

Helodermatidae, the beaded lizards, is a small family of lizards native today to North America, chiefly the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, the Chiapas lowlands and the Guatemala border area, though it was more widespread in the past. Named by John Edward Gray in 1837, the family contains one living genus, Heloderma, whose best known members are the Gila monster and the Mexican beaded lizard, the latter recently split into several separate species, alongside two extinct genera, Eurheloderma and Lowesaurus.
