Zamenis is a genus of nonvenomous Old World snakes, family Colubridae, subfamily Colubrinae, comprising six recognized valid species native to Europe and the Middle East. The genus name derives from Greek, meaning angry or fierce, a reference to the temperament of some of its species. The best known member is Zamenis longissimus, the Aesculapian snake, and other species carry common names including the ladder snake and the European ratsnake.
