Buxus sempervirens, known as common box, European box or boxwood, is an evergreen flowering shrub or small tree in the family Buxaceae, native to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia, from southern England south to northern Morocco and east through the northern Mediterranean to Turkey. It typically grows one to nine metres tall, occasionally to ten, with small opposite leaves that are green to yellow green, oval, 1.5 to 3 centimetres long and 0.5 to 1.3 centimetres wide, and inconspicuous, petal-less, greenish yellow monoecious flowers that give rise to a three lobed seed capsule. The related Buxus colchica of the western Caucasus and B. hyrcana of northern Iran are generally treated as synonyms of this species.
