Grey plover

The grey plover, Pluvialis squatarola, formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, is a large plover in the family Charadriidae with a nearly worldwide coastal distribution outside the breeding season. It breeds in Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Russia and undertakes long distance migrations to winter in coastal areas of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In the New World the same species is known as the black bellied plover rather than the grey plover, reflecting different regional naming. It is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
