Charadriidae is the family of plovers, dotterels and lapwings, placed in the order Charadriiformes and comprising 69 species divided into 12 genera, found worldwide in open country predominantly near water. Members are small to medium sized birds with compact bodies, short thick necks, and long pointed wings except in the lapwings, along with straight, short bills and reduced hind toes; the family spans from the 14 centimeter, 26 gram collared plover to the 35 centimeter, 368 gram masked lapwing.
