The greater sand plover is a small wader in the plover family of birds. Its spelling is sometimes given as greater sandplover or greater sand-plover, though the official spelling used by the International Ornithologists' Union and the British Ornithologists' Union is greater sand plover. Its specific name, leschenaultii, commemorates the French botanist Jean Baptiste Leschenault de la Tour. Like most other species now placed in the genus Anarhynchus, it was until recently included in the genus Charadrius.
