All Roundworms (Nematoda)

Roundworms, the nematodes, number more than 15,000 known species, and a single handful of garden soil can hold many thousands of individuals. If current estimates of undiscovered species are close, they would be the second most diverse group of animals after the arthropods. The body is long and narrow like a tiny thread, which is the origin of the name, since nema is Greek for thread. A tough, flexible cuticle serves as a skeleton and is shed periodically, usually four times before adulthood. All the muscles run lengthwise, so a nematode can only bend from side to side. Current studies place nematodes in the Ecdysozoa with the arthropods and priapulids.
