Amherstia nobilis is a tropical tree that grows to about fifteen meters in height and bears large, showy flowers; it is the only species in the genus Amherstia. Widely cultivated for ornament in the humid tropics, it is extinct in the wild, known only from a single wild specimen recorded in 1865, and is thus thought to be native to Burma, now Myanmar, though Plants of the World Online also lists it as native to neighboring Thailand. Its scientific name commemorates Lady Amherst and her daughter Sarah. The common name orchid tree is also used for members of the separate genus Bauhinia.
