Apis cerana

Insects

Apis cerana, known as the eastern honey bee or Asian honey bee, is a species of honey bee native to South, Southeast, and East Asia, ranging from Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East south to eastern Indonesia and west into the highlands of Afghanistan. It is the sister species of Apis koschevnikovi and shares its subgenus with the western honey bee, Apis mellifera. Like other honey bees it is highly social, building nests of multiple combs inside cavities with small entrances that help defend against invasion by other colonies, and it feeds mainly on pollen, nectar, and honey. Populations once called Apis cerana indica or the Indian honey bee are now classified within this same species. Although the species was naturally clustered in East Asia, it has now expanded to various regions across the world as a result of human interference, with particular concern about its invasive potential in Australia as nests are found in a variety of environments, including both natural and man-made (see below).
