The Argentine ant is native to northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and southern Brazil, and has spread globally as an invasive species, becoming established in many Mediterranean-climate regions including South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, Easter Island, Australia, the Azores, Europe, Hawaii and the continental United States. A significant pest of agricultural and urban settings, it is documented to cause substantial harm to native arthropods, vertebrates and plants wherever it invades.
