Atlantic Halibut

The Atlantic halibut is a flatfish native to the temperate and Arctic waters of the northern Atlantic, ranging from Labrador and Greenland to Iceland, the Barents Sea and as far south as the Bay of Biscay and Virginia. It is the largest flatfish in the world, reaching lengths of up to 4.7 metres and weights of 320 kilograms, and can live for as long as 50 years. A demersal fish living on or near sand, gravel or clay bottoms at depths between 50 and 2,000 metres, it is a strong swimmer capable of migrating long distances, though its slow growth rate and history of overfishing have left it classified as a threatened species.
