The Atlantic mudskipper is an amphibious fish found along the coasts of West Africa, where it lives in mangrove swamps and mudflats. Unlike most fish, it spends much of its time out of water, using its muscular pectoral fins to crawl across mud and even climb onto low vegetation and rocks. It breathes partly through its skin and the lining of its mouth and throat, which allows it to survive for extended periods on land as long as it stays moist.
