Babesia is a genus of apicomplexan parasites, comprising over 100 species, that infect the red blood cells of vertebrate hosts including livestock and humans, and are transmitted by ticks. The parasite was first identified in 1888 by Romanian bacteriologist Victor Babes, and it causes the disease babesiosis, also called piroplasmosis; in the United States the species Babesia microti is the most common cause of human infection, carried by the same deer tick that transmits Lyme disease.
