Balantidium coli is a parasitic ciliate and the only member of its phylum known to cause disease in humans, though pigs are its main natural reservoir. It also infects cattle, camels, sheep, buffalo, rodents, and occasionally birds and marine mammals. The disease it causes, balantidiasis, occurs worldwide but is reported most often in humid tropical and subtropical parts of Central and South America and Asia.
