Calappa is a genus of crabs commonly known as box crabs or shame-faced crabs. The name box crab comes from their distinctly bulky carapace, while shame-faced comes from the way the crab's claws fold up to cover its face, as if hiding it in shame. The genus name calappa is associated with kelapa, the Malay word for coconut.
