Brant (goose)

The brant, or brent goose (Branta bernicla), is a small goose in the genus Branta, with three recognized subspecies that all winter along temperate-zone sea coasts and breed on high-Arctic tundra. It measures 55 to 66 centimeters long with a wingspan of 106 to 121 centimeters and weighs 0.88 to 2.2 kilograms, and is recognizable by its short stubby bill and pure white under-tail set off by a very short black tail. The Brent oilfield in the North Sea was named after the species, which is assessed as Least Concern and covered by the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds.
