Buxbaumia

Buxbaumia is a genus of twelve moss species, first named in 1742 and later placed into modern botanical nomenclature to honor the German physician and botanist who discovered it near the mouth of the Volga River. For most of its life the plant is microscopic and goes unnoticed, becoming visible only once it produces its distinctively asymmetrical spore capsule, a structure whose shape appears to bridge primitive and modern moss lineages.
