Pieris rapae is a small-to-medium-sized butterfly of the whites-and-yellows family Pieridae, known in Europe as the small white, in North America and the United Kingdom as the cabbage white or cabbage butterfly, and in New Zealand as the white butterfly. It is recognizable by its white coloring with small black dots on its wings, and can be distinguished from the related Pieris brassicae by its smaller size and the absence of a black band at the forewing tip.
