The Chinook salmon is the largest and most valuable species of Pacific salmon, its common name derived from the Chinookan peoples. It is also known by vernacular names including king salmon, quinnat salmon, spring salmon, blackmouth and tyee salmon, and its scientific species name comes from the Russian common name chavycha.
