Cladonia coccifera

Cladonia coccifera, also called madame's cup lichen, is a species of fruticose cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. It was first described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 work Species Plantarum, and the German botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow transferred it to the genus Cladonia in 1787. The lichen bears apothecia and bright red pycnidia atop yellowish to grey-green podetia one to two centimeters high, with a base of rounded squamules that are yellow to orange-brown on their undersurface. It typically grows on acidic peaty and sandy soils.
